I was SO excited when I read the prologue- Nesta was pissed, and I was excited for SJM to turn the “converted to an immortal” trope on its head. I love me some flawed, hateful characters so I have no issue with that and I’ve never understood the dislike of characters that have significant flaws.

For lack of a better term, she’s kind of a spiteful bitch in the original trilogy, and sometimes you get more of a polarizing response from readers to characters such as her. That’s about where the positives end for me, so on to the issues I had.Ī lot of people who I’ve seen who don’t like this book just don’t like Nesta’s more abrasive character. I also enjoyed the first 10% of this story. I also still think Sarah J Maas is great at exploring themes of friendship, love and sacrifice which always culminate in a fairly emotional climax in her books. Unfortunately, I just think it was executed very poorly. I appreciate what SJM was trying to do and tell a story about overcoming trauma and empowering oneself. I’ll first start with what I appreciate from this book. And… well I can’t really overstate my disappointment. I was so excited to see what SJM would come up with now that she’s veering more into adult fantasy romance. My lovely GR friends gave it an average of 4.5 stars.

So here we arrive at A Court of Silver Flames- my most anticipated book of 2021. Immediately after I read A Court of Wings and Ruin in one day, which I gave 5 stars but now looking back on it, there were a few major issues that make the book a bit more flawed upon second inspection. I loved it and that book still has a special place in my heart. I soon read A Court of Mist and Fury, which was my first book with a significant romantic plot that I felt was executed extremely well. It was highly readable but a bit basic and generic with a convoluted yet emotionally climactic plot. I read A Court of Thorns and Roses in 2017 as my first introduction to her, which was okay. My history with Sarah J Maas is one that I wouldn’t say is complicated, but is very mixed. So get some snacks ready because I have a lot of thoughts about this book and I need some space to rant. I so wish that I loved this one like the majority of readers- but alas it was not meant to be. While SJM can be a bit hit or miss for me, her books have always been at the very least entertaining but this one was just not it for me. In fact I will go so far to say that this was a hate read.
